Education and Skills

The specific Investing for Health Objective relating to the Education and Skills Community of Interest is 'to enable all people and young people in particular to develop the skills and attitudes that will give them the capacity to reach their full potential and make healthy choices.'

In February 2005 the Eastern Area Investing for Health Partnership hosted a major Event in NICVA at which representatives from the Department of Education, Department of Employment and Learning and 50 representives of a range of stakeholder organisations agreed to explore how further action can be organised and undertaken on this objective, primarily on a Locality basis within the Eastern Board area.

Over 17% of 16 year olds in Northern Ireland currently leave school with fewer than 5 GCSE's. Considerable inequalities in educational outcome continue to exist, particularly as educational underperformance is strongly correlated with disadvantaged communities and Neighbourhood Renewal areas. The Minister of Education announced a 'Every School a Good School' strategy for improving literacy and numeracy on 21st October 2008. Linked to the E2S Entitled to Succeed Programme-the Department of Education's strategy to improve standards in Northern Ireland Schools.

Eastern Investing for Health Partnership continue to play an active part in supporting the E2S programme, particularly through the Advisory Panels of 'Extended Schools' and in investing in organisations who support people to reach their full potential, including returning to study, such as Opportunity Youth.
