Profile North and West Belfast Locality

Much work has been carried out by a range of organisations in the North and West of Belfast over the past number of years to assist in identifying health need and produce a comprehensive picture of the health status of the population. The Health Improvement Plan will be drawing on this information, to help shape the priorities for health development in the future. "The North and West Belfast Health Action Zone Multi Agency Database and Analysis - A profile of North and West Belfast" 2001 (2) provides excellent comparative data on the health status of the population of North and West Belfast.

Population of North and West Belfast: 143,646 (Census 2001(3))

Age composition of North and West Population

0 – 15 years = 25%
16 – 64 years = 60%
65 + years = 15%

Within North and West Belfast significant variations in population distribution occur. In North Belfast 19.3% of the population are 60+ compared with 24% in the Greater Shankill area and only 15.7% in West Belfast.

With regards to children, in North, Shankill and West Belfast, 25%, 23.5% and 28% of the population are less than 16 years respectively. The age profile in the three sectors varies significantly pointing to different social and healthcare need requirements. (HAZ 2001 (4))
