South and East Belfast and Castlereagh Locality

The South & East Belfast and Castlereagh area extends from Belfast Lough and Inner City Belfast to Dundonald and Castlereagh in the east, and to Carryduff and Newtownbreda in the south. The area has the highest population figures in the EHSSB area. According to the 2001 Census, there were 200,346 residents. The common perception of South & East Belfast and Castlereagh is one of an affluent area with a few small pockets of deprivation. However, on examining a number of factors, significant levels of deprivation are evident, not only in the inner city areas, but also in the housing estates on the periphery of Belfast & Castlereagh.

The approach taken to developing the Investing for Health Agenda in South and East Belfast and Castlereagh can be described as follows;

Integrated Planning

An annual planning Event has been organised to allow all stakeholders across the Statutory, Community and Voluntary sectors to come together to review and plan priorities and actions associated with local need and the Investing for Health Goals and Objectives. This Event is jointly organised by South and East Belfast Trust and the Eastern Area Investing for Health Partnership Locality Manager.

Communities of Interest

The Investing for Health Manager, working closely with colleagues from SEBT Health Promotion and Community Development Team, has organised a number of Multi Agency Planning Groups. These Groups, called Community of Interest Groups, develop planning and actions on specific needs and gaps and are based on the Objectives of the Investing for Health Strategy. To date Community of Interest Groups exist for Fuel Poverty, Mental Health Promotion and Healthier Lifestyles.
